A Personal Note: Gay Marriage, Gay Pride and the effect society makes in our lives

I've been reading a number of articles online recently about the fight concerning gay marriage. Without getting on a soapbox, I want to know what the fight is all about. Simple question, I think. You see, I'm in a relationship. No, I'm married, to the woman of my dreams, and her name is Angie. In 2001, Angie became disabled, and has since had six surgeries. She now has not one, but two, implants. The first is a spinal cord stimulator. The other is a med pump. Angie is no longer able to work. For that matter, she has difficulties with common everyday tasks. Tasks that most people take for granted.

I am the operator/owner of three businesses. The work is a necessity for the money to pay for the prescriptions, which average seven hundred dollars a month and for the medical insurance supplemental which just increased to almost six hundred dollars a month.  Anything that we are able to put aside is going towards an addition (currently under construction) on our house which will have a handicap accessible bathroom as well as a first floor bedroom as the stairs are getting increasing difficult for her.

You see, we are working for the same goals as all of our neighbors. We want food on our table, a roof over our head and a comfortable home. Like our neighbors, we would love the opportunity to be able to have the same benefits offered to us. Benefits of insurance coverage and tax breaks. We aren't wanting anything that we haven't worked for. We aren't asking to put anyone out for our benefit. We are only asking to be treated equally, fairly. 

To most I am no one special so who will hear my voice. Who will listen to my words. Who will listen to my heart. 

Six times I have waited, what seemed like an eternity, for the doctor to come out to the waiting room and tell me that everything went well with Angie's surgery. More times than I care to mention, I have sat and rubbed her face and back with a cold washcloth as she was getting sick. I have worked Angie through her exercises as directed by the physical therapist. I have given her a shoulder to cry on when her frustration gets too grand for her to handle. Who on earth would I do all this for except for the woman I love. You see Angie is my family, she is my soul mate, the love of my life, my wife. What there is so terrible wrong that half of America feels so strongly to deny us basic liberties... the pursuit of happiness and liberty and justice for all.

Everyday I see Angie in pain, and though I cannot feel her pain I share it. We share everything. We do this as a family. Every day we have the same battles as our neighbors, because we are just like our neighbors. Just like them in every regard except that we have yet another struggle to overcome, discrimination.

As for the religious factor that seems to possess such strength in this fight, I ask one question. Why? And better yet, who are you to say my family is not a family. We are a faithful, loving couple who have had a private ceremony expressing our love for one another. We have struggles sometimes just to get through the day, but we do, and we do it together. Heterosexual couples have turned marriage into a disposable commitment. We are not the ones making a mockery of marriage, they are. Think for a minute. How many couples do you know that got married and stayed married? How many were faithful to one another? I have three sisters. Among them there have been six marriages. One once, one twice and the other three times. The one who has been married three times is the one who is most against our right to marry. Go figure.

Think about it. What will our marriage and happiness do to affect anyone else? If it's jealousy, get over it. If it's based on religious reasons, cast that stone. Remember to ask yourself though, will God punish me for loving or punish you for hating and judging.

We, as a society, are falling into a trend here. The trend is striving to outlaw basic fundamental rights. The right to marry and women's rights over their body are not little agendas. They have effects on many people. The effects are emotional, spiritual and sometimes physical. You see, life is difficult enough these days, why make it harder. Whatever happened to taking care of your own house? Because if you want to take care of mine I can show you where we keep the dust rags and the vacuum.
